EXAMPLE POINTS (FROM WORK IN CLASS) on Eddie in conflict with characters- Catherine, Rodolpho and Marco.

Point one – First introduced to Eddie’s confusion between his FORBIDDEN DESIRES and RESPONSIBILITY (AND REPUTATION) through the introduction of a conflict with Catherine. Eddie is unimpressed with her new-found style (HEELS). He is uncomfortable with the fact that she is clearly growing up. Perhaps he is experiencing unwelcome thoughts about his niece. page 6

Point 2 – we see further conflict in the key scene between Eddie and the two immigrants Marco and Rodolpho. Eddie tries to assert his masculinity to prove that he is in control. Dramatic tension is used to show the audience that Eddie’s power is threatened and to foreshadow his violent end. MASCULINITY AND RESPONSIBILITY AND REPUTATION. 51-52

Point 3 – The play’s tragic ending shows us the sad result of all of the avoidable conflict in the play. Eddie is ultimately responsible for his own death as the events leading up to this were all his fault. RESPONSIBILITY AND REPUTATION as a result of FORBIDDEN DESIRES. 77-end
